“All organisations have regulatory responsibilities which they must meet around the safety of their workers and contractors. This extends from Safety Governance at the highest level in the organisation, through WHS Committee representation of all the work groups in the business, to any person in the business responsible for a Business Undertaking (a PCBU).

….and there are so many facets to the legislation…”who is a PCBU here in my organisation, for example…am I?”

AusSafety's approach is not a 'cookie cutter' approach

For over 20 years, we have worked with employers nationally to understand each organisation’s specific industry and cirumstances, along with the evolving and varied State legislation, to tailor training for the key people in each client’s specific business or organisation. AusSafety’s approach is not a ‘cookie cutter’ approach because no two organisations are exactly the same. Neither is our approach simply one of compliance. Yes, legal protections are achieved with the training and safety systems development work we will do with your organisation. Additionally and importantly, however, we will assist your organisation to ingrain a safety culture into the whole organisation.

A safety culture lived daily across the organisation is extremely important in workers behaving safely at work, in their identifying potential risks, in their challenging the adequacy of current risk mitigation strategies, and in looking after each other. Having a strong safety culture is something Employers of Choice have developed, and your organisation’s external brand is also enhanced. But how to make this happen?

Building a strong safety culture

Even sending the WHS Committee away to do a short course, or make them battle unassisted through some online learning, can be a time consuming and not necessarily the most effective way to achieve a ‘step change’. Our very mission at AusSafety is to help your people get home safety to their loved ones – what price that? Call us today for a confidential discussion about meeting your organisation’s specific needs via a really focussed and effective training and cultural development program on 1300 766 139

Why AusSafety Training?

We have over 20 years’ experience providing high-quality and practical training across a number of areas within the WHS field. Many of our courses centre around introductory awareness training, however our Screening Audiometry Training ensures the participant meets the requirements of AS1269.4:2014 to competently undertake screening audiometry within the workplace.

WHS Consulting Services

AusSafety offers Health and Safety Advisor services to companies Australia-wide.

Increasingly, we’re finding that even large companies often have the requirement to call on extra Health & Safety capability from outside their permanent pool of staff to meet the safety obligations inherent in large projects or shutdown works, or to augment the existing safety capability in-house.

Are you a business that doesn’t have the resources for a dedicated health and safety advisor? Do you as the director, wear this hat too, as well as all the others? Or are you a larger business with a well-established health and safety department that needs a little outside help from time to time?

Organisations need to ensure they are giving due consideration to discharging their duties under the Workplace Health and Safety legislation. This includes ensuring that the PCBU is eliminating or minimising risks to health and safety as far as is reasonably practicable, with the resources available.

Focused driven approach

AusSafety Services can fill any gap your business may need with our WHS consultation services. Whether its total WHS management system development, through to SDS reviews or SWMS development, we can tailor any consultation to suit your needs.

We can provide a full safety service that is compliant to AS4801 or ISO45001 and can offer gap analysis and assistance in achieving accreditation for either standard.

Comprehensive Consultation

Comprehensive consultation includes handing over the development of the WHS management system to us. We set it up and train you how to run the system. We can then check back in at set intervals to run safety meetings, toolbox talks, and regular audits to ensure the system is working as it should and you’re complying with your legal obligations. We can also help coach and teach one of more of your existing employees the knowledge to maintain the system over the longer term.

This service may include:

  • A Comprehensive AS4801 or ISO45001 WHS Management System specific to your business that will help you gain third party accreditation;
  • Creation of all policies, procedures and checklists/forms;
  • Development of Safe Work Procedures for high-risk tasks & Safe Work Method Statements/JSA’s;
  • Hazardous Chemical register Chemical Risk Assessments (if applicable);
  • Hazard identification and register compilation;
  • Risk assessments on identified hazards completed;
  • Incident management procedure and process;
  • New start induction and training to all new and existing workers; and
  • Regular safety meetings and toolbox talks.

Part-time consultation

This includes some of the hands-on services listed in the Comprehensive setup, except that you already have your WHS management system setup and in place. You’re just having a hard time administering it and running it day to day. Depending on the size of your organisation, you may have a varied number of inputs into the record keeping part of the system. We can tailor a short-term consultation placement that suits the input and administration required, whether that’s 1 day a week, 1 day a month, a week every 3 months or an audit as an internal auditor to help keep you on track for your external third-party accreditation audits.

These types of placements can occur as a result of a number of factors including new major projects, serious incidents, resignation illnesses or extended leave of key staff.

Third-party review capabilities

A key area in WHS Management System is ensuring you have experience and knowledgeable people reviewing company documentation to ensure it meets legislative requirements and Australian or International Standards. We have consultants with years of experience in all areas of workplace health and safety and occupational hygiene who can provide a robust team resource under our WHS consultation process, available to review and advise on any strategic documents associated with your WHS Management System.

Your Next Steps

The most important actions a business can take are the first step to decide to take action, and the step of following up that action. Taking the first step to undertake an audit of your business to improve processes is great, but what matters most is the continued follow up action to continually improve the business’ health and safety performance.

Nobody likes non-compliances, but not knowing about them and burying your head in the sand is worse, especially when the business can be held legally liable for any potential failing

About Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) Management System’s

State or territory legislation requires the person conducting a business or undertaking (PCBU) to provide safe systems of work. A Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) Management System is an essential part of the business to ensure the health and safety of every person the business interacts with, internally and externally. Previously in Australia, Health and Safety Management Systems were based on AS/NZS 4801:2001 and AS/NZS 4804:2001. However, since 2018 ISO 45001 has now replaced both 4801 and 4804.

Our hands-on approach helps us foster long-lasting relationships with our clients where we can help them achieve their health and safety targets. We can do this by providing technical advice and independent expert review capabilities.

The benefit of a WHS System

A Workplace Health and Safety management is a system helps a business create and maintain a safe work environment. Within that, the system must also:

  • Set Standards, Policies, Targets & Objectives
  • Manage Risk
  • Inspect, Audit & Continual Improvement
  • Ensure competent & trained workers
  • Ensure a safe work environment
  • Plan for emergency situations

Our Approach to Environmental Noise

Environmental noise is defined as unwanted or harmful outdoor sound created by human activity, such as noise emitted by means of transport, road traffic, rail traffic, air traffic and industrial activity. Environmental noise is a pervasive environmental pollutant that leads to annoyance and can be perceived as stressful. The impacts on people reach from annoyance and sleep disturbance over direct impacts on the aural system, indirect physical impacts to cognitive impairments and psychological disorders. Noise impacts vary with exposure levels, time of day, sound source characteristics, peoples’ constitution, surrounding conditions and the cultural settings and may well change over time.

AusSafety can help you with:

Environment noise assessment

An environmental noise assessment may be as simple as taking some short-term 15 minute attended measurements at a single problem location, to multi location long-term continuous noise logging that could last a week, or a month at a time. Our acoustic consultants take the time to discern your problem and find the right solution.

Our highly experienced consultants can navigate the rules and regulations surrounding environmental noise. This includes understanding AS1055:2018 Acoustics – Description and Measurement of Environmental Noise, SEPP’s, Council By-laws, & ERA’s.

The Australian Standard sets out general procedures for the description and measurement of environmental noise, including repetitive impulsive noise. It defines the basic quantities to be used for the description of noise in community environments and provides basic procedures for the determination of these quantities. The Standard applies primarily to noise emitted from industrial, commercial and residential premises. It excludes the setting of environmental noise criteria. Such levels are set by regulations or organizational policies including those referenced above.

Our Approach to Asbestos & Hazardous Materials

It is estimated that asbestos makes up approximately 6.4 million Tonnes of the built environment of Australia. Exposure to asbestos or hazardous materials can lead to chronic, life shortening disease or other serious health effects. As an example, the incidence of mesothelioma has been steadily increasing since the early 1980’s.

Hazardous materials management is undertaken by licensed assessors to assist PCBU’s control the risk of exposure to workers. When it comes to asbestos and hazardous materials management, our consultants offer a range of services that include but are not limited to:

  • Building, plant, structure, vehicle inspections and suspect material sampling
  • Asbestos and Hazardous Materials Surveys and Register development
  • Asbestos and Hazardous Materials Risk Assessments
  • Asbestos Air Monitoring, including personal exposure monitoring and asbestos removal control monitoring
  • Asbestos Clearance Inspections and Reports
  • Asbestos and Hazardous Materials Management Plans

Hazardous Materials in the Built Environment:

Along with Asbestos, these hazardous materials are commonly found in the build environment around Australia:

  • Synthetic mineral fibres
  • Lead paint
  • Ozone depleting substances (ODS)
  • Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs)
  • Sulphur hexafluoride (SF6)

All of these materials have been routinely used in workplaces throughout history. These materials have been known to cause a number of adverse health and environmental effects. Asbestos for example is known to cause lung cancer, mesothelioma, and asbestosis in humans.

The need for all organisations to minimise the risk posed to building occupants by asbestos and hazardous materials is enshrined in workplace health and safety law. One of the largest sections of the model WHS Regulations deals with the management of asbestos. It is a highly regulated material.

National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) accredited laboratories

We partner with National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) accredited laboratories for the sample analysis, whether it be bulk asbestos samples, asbestos or synthetic mineral fibre counts, or lead in paint. Given the highly regulated nature of asbestos, if there is any doubt as to what steps should be taken, it is best to speak with an expert to provide the right advice. To briefly display how regulated asbestos is within the workplace, the following is true based on the model WHS Regulations in Australia:

  • All workplaces that have building built prior to 2003 are required to have Asbestos Registers if there is reason to believe that asbestos may be present.
  • An asbestos register must state the location, condition and risk of the material, amongst other things.
  • The asbestos register must be regularly reviewed and revised as necessary, typically with intervals no greater than 5 years. Individual risk assessments may require more regular reviews.
  • Where asbestos is present in a workplace, an asbestos management plan must be developed and in place. There are stringent requirements about what must be in an asbestos management plan.
  • Asbestos can typically only be removed by licensed tradespeople. There are few exceptions where this is not the case, however they must be competent and knowledgeable about the correct removal and disposal requirements.
  • Air monitoring may be required by law, however is generally best practice, for when asbestos is being removed. Air monitoring ensures that the asbestos being removed is done so in a controlled manner.
  • Asbestos clearance inspections must be undertaken at the completion of licensed asbestos removal. This is to ensure all asbestos containing materials within the scope or work have been removed and the area is safe for re-occupation.

Respirator Fit Testing

All tight-fitting respirators must be fit tested annually to ensure safety & comfort for the worker.

Respiratory protection is a vital control to make sure any airborne contaminants within the breathing zone of the worker do not enter the respiratory system. Poor respirator fit’s can allows airborne particles to enter the respiratory system and can lead to chronic disease. AusSafety have on-site respirator fit test solutions used by all industries across Australia. Contact us today!

Please note – At this time AusSafety can only perform individual Fit-Tests in South East Queensland

Our Approach to Respirator Fit Testing

Respirators are a final control in managing risks associated with airborne contaminants. Workers who don respirators must be fit-tested in order to confirm the assumed level of protection provided by the respirator. This must be done upon issuing a new respirator, annually thereafter or earlier if any facial changes occur.

All respirator fit testing is undertaken in accordance with AS/NZS 1715:2009 Selection, use and maintenance of respiratory protective equipment. We have AIOH Resp-Fit qualified fit-testers who ensure all fit testing is performed to current best practice. This partnered with 20 years of on-site experience ensures you are receiving the highest quality service.

If you require respirator fit-testing services and would like to have this done on-site, contact us today.

How we perform Fit Testing

There are two methods of fit-testing that are accepted within the standard.

  • Qualitative – a pass/fail test that relies on the wearer’s ability to taste airborne particles introduced to the testing environment by our fit-test technician.
  • Quantitative – calibrated equipment measures the effectiveness of the seal by comparing the external & internal particle count

Depending on the style of respirator AusSafety will perform one of these tests on each type of respirator the worker uses.

Where a worker fails a fit test, AusSafety will trouble shoot with the worker to determine the cause of the failure. This may include:

  • Facial hair being present, causing the seal to fail. In this case we can perform a retest following the worker shaving
  • Where a respirator is damaged and no longer seals AusSafety will perform a re-test after the worker has donned a new respirator.

The facial structure is incompatible with respirator. In this case we can perform a retest with a different shape/style of respirator.

Following the testing, our technician will provide a Fit-Test card that the worker can keep so the respirator can be replaced with the correct model & size. AusSafety provides the employer a comprehensive report showing the list of attendees, the result of their test & the approved respirator. Where employees were unable to receive a fit, details regarding why will be given in this report so control measures can be reviewed.

On-Site Lung Function Screening

Lung Function testing can help identify issues in the lungs of workers

Lung function screening (also known as Spirometry) is a non-invasive solution to identifying possible obstructions in the lungs of workers. Some respiratory illnesses don’t develop for many years following the exposure, so regular lung function screening is critical for quick identification of issues. Call us or request a proposal today for an on-site lung function screening solution!

Our Approach to Lung Function Testing

Workers who are exposed to airborne contaminants such as crystalline silica may develop chronic health conditions that impact lung function. Performing lung function testing (also known as spirometry) can assist in identifying a reduction in lung function or other respiratory issues and assist in establishing a medical diagnosis when other testing may not have been conducted (e.g. chest x-ray).

AusSafety have been trusted by some of Australia’s largest employers to perform lung function testing for workers on-site as part of their health surveillance program. All testing is performed to current medical guidelines (The Thoracic Society of Australia & New Zealand guidelines). All consultants who perform lung function testing have been qualified to perform high-quality spirometry.

Whether it is 30 or 3000 workers that you need tested, AusSafety will tailor a lung function testing program to suit your needs, including shift requirements, multi-locations & role requirements.

How we conduct Lung Function Testing

Once you have engaged AusSafety to perform lung function testing you will be in safe hands. Our project management team will work alongside you to ensure all scheduling, site specific challenges & other requirements are looked after. Our team have experience in managing projects from 1 worker through to thousands of workers across multiple locations. We reduce the logistical nightmare of coordinating health surveillance programmes.
Our mobile health clinic or health consultant (where a mobile health clinic isn’t required) will come to your site & setup ready to perform lung function testing for all workers. Lung Function testing is performed by deeply inhaling and forcefully exhaling into a spirometer. This provides a reading related to the measurement of lung size (Forced Vital Capacity FVC) & the amount of air that is exhaled within time restrictions (Forced Expiratory Volume FEV1). With both these measurements and a calculation of the FEV1/FVC ratio we are able to determine if the reading indicates normal respiration or if a possible restriction or obstruction exists within the respiratory system.
After performing the testing onsite, AusSafety’s team will compile the lung function testing results for the workers and compile a comprehensive testing report. This report will include individual results & a compiled company report with each workers results & recommendations based on the result.

Lung Function Testing

Lung Function (also known as spirometry) testing is becoming a more common part of worker health assessments and workplace health programs. AusSafety can help your company by providing onsite lung function (spirometry) testing of your workers using our calibrated scientific equipment. AusSafety’s technicians are qualified to meet all current relevant standards including

  • QLD Coal Mine Workers Health Scheme
  • NSW Coal Services Order 43
  • Meet core competencies outlined by ANZSRS Spirometry Training Courses

Each test is performed to the Thoracic Society of Australia & New Zealand’s guidelines (the most current medical opinion). We also offer a medical review service for all abnormal results at your request that is conduced by an occupational physician.

Following the lung function (spirometry) test, each worker is given an overview of their results by our technician. AusSafety also supplies individual records and a company report to meet the requirements of your workplace health program
