Onsite Lung Function Screening

Where there is a risk to workers health as the result of exposure to atmospheric contaminants lung function testing is used for the early identification of reduced lung capacity and/or flow.

The benefit of lung function testing (spirometry) is that it can detect a reduction in lung function even when there are no apparent signs or symptoms of disease. The spirometry result can also be used to help establish a medical diagnosis when other testing has not yet been conducted (e.g. chest X-Ray)

Spirometry Testing

With the increased understanding of the impacts of airborne contaminants such as silica and its impact on the health of workers, standardised lung function testing has become a vital part of worker health assessments. If you have workers who are exposed to airborne dust, you may be required to perform spirometry testing. For further information regarding your requirements to perform lung function testing please call our team today on 1300 766 139

Spirometry testing can detect abnormalities in lung function even when no other signs or symptoms of diseases are evident
Diseases such as silicosis & asbestos don’t present symptoms until many years after the exposure event, so regular monitoring is vital.

How does it work

Spirometry is performed by deeply inhaling and forcefully exhaling into a spirometer. This provides a reading related to the measurement of lung size (Forced Vital Capacity FVC) & the amount of air that is exhaled within time restrictions (Forced Expiratory Volume FEV1). With both these measurements and a calculation of the FEV1/FVC ratio we are able to determine if the reading indicates normal respiration or if a possible restriction or obstruction exists within the lungs.
Where there is an obstructive or restrictive lung disease, symptoms can include shortness of breath, coughing and possible ejection of white or coloured sputum whilst coughing. Where an obstructive or restrictive lung result is produced, it is important that further medical advice is sought.
Variations related to worker ethnicity, age and smoking status are all factored into calculations as per The Thoracic Society of Australia & New Zealand guidelines.

We can help you navigate this all onsite!

Lung function testing is becoming a more common part of worker health assessments and workplace health programs. AusSafety can help your company by providing onsite lung function testing of your workers using our calibrated spirometry equipment. Aussafety’s technicians are qualified to meet all current relevant standards including
QLD Coal Mine Workers Health Scheme
NSW Coal Services Order 43
Meet core competencies outlined by ANZSRS Spirometry Training Courses
Each test is performed to the Thoracic Society of Australia & New Zealand’s guidelines (the most current medical opinion). We also offer a medical review service for all abnormal results at your request.
Following the lung function test, each worker is given an overview of their results by our technician. AusSafety also supplies individual records and a company report to meet the requirements of your workplace health program.
